LCDs, LEDs and OLED TVs: Which one to buy?

Today's world is changing. Technology has become its key aspect. For entertainment, technology has given us TV. We go home and first thing we do switch on our TVs. The world of television is revolutionizing. Everyday companies launches a new TV with a new term associated with it. Consumer just get engaged into it and most of us don't know what that tech even mean. The most three common tech words we hear with TVs are LCD TV, LED TV and OLED TV. My friend and relatives always seem to be confused within them. Most of time, they buy such things which they don't even want. So, Lets gaze into these terms today.

What is LCD?
LCD stands for Liquid Crystalline Display. In LCD TV panels, there is a flat display which is made of Liquid Crystals. Most of our phones display's 1-2 years before come packed with this technology.
But the question is how these display produce light. Behind this LCD display, there is a backlight which when projected on crystals, they produce light in single or different colours. CCFLs (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) are use in backlight. These  TVs are bulkier and thick in size.

What is LED?
LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. LED TVs are not much different than LCDs. The only difference is in backlight. Instead of using CCFLs, they use LEDs. So this is the only difference between LED and LCD TV. The use of LED make them thinner and more power efficient. Most of today's smartphones also use this display tech in their devices.

What is OLED?
OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode. This where the game really changes. It is the whole new level of technology and one of the most advanced display technology. In this tech, there is no need of backlight to illuminate the display. Here pixels actually produces light. But how it is possible. Well it is made possible by representing each pixel by an OLED. Most of the high end phones like Samsung Galaxy S8, S7 etc. uses this in their display.

These are all tech and science stuff. But how these tech affect our daily viewing experience. That's what we will consider now.

LCD Vs LED Vs OLED
The biggest difference among all these is of contrast. The blacks we see on our TV screen is not absolute black. LCD use CCFL for backlight, so it is not possible for them to produce absolute black. If they go absolute black, then there will be also no colour on other parts of the screen. The other downside is with viewing angles. You have to sit in front of TV to get a perfect view otherwise picture will look worse. Colours are good but little bit washed out. These displays are not very much produced these days. LED have replaced them.

In case of LED, backlight is due to of LED. Well it is not a single big source of light so still we can dim light at different parts of screen. The blacks level here produced are better than LCD but not absolute black. The problem of viewing angle is also same as above here. IPS technology have provided some significant improvements but still not that much. Some new LED display have produced very fine and accurate colours like iPhone 7 display. These are most widely used display around the world. They are used in TV, monitor, smartphones etc. LED TV starts from very affordable price (starting from $100(Rs7000)) and goes up to quite high.

OLED is a completely different. In this every pixel is illuminated by single OLED. So we can just control pixel by pixel. We can completely switch off a pixel. It produces absolute black. OLED enjoys excellent viewing angle. You can view from even corner without losing quality. Colours are vivid and more natural but still it has some problems with colours. With time technology will be more refined and it will be able to produce colours of top notch quality. The best thing is their beauty due to of their thinness. These can be made into very beautiful TVs. The biggest downside with OLED TV are extreme difficulty in their production. This make them very expensive. They start from price tag of $2500(Rs2,00,000 approx.) and goes up to very high.

Conclusion
Well in nutshell its come to personal preference. The first thing to consider is money. OLED are not for everyone right now maybe after 10 years they will be. A middle class consumer will go for LED. LED produce more brighter colors than OLED. LED can go up to 2000nits and OLED can only produce brightness of 800nits. So it is your personal preference. No doubt OLED is more better technology but still it is not completely developed and very expensive. Well as I said earlier display technology is revolutionizing. We have new contender Quantum Dot. So in future might be we only talking about Quantum dot.
